Mixing and Mastering Services

In the past, the mixing and mastering services of music tracks was a very clearly separate and rather technical process: the mixing engineer mixed the tracks onto a master tape and the mastering engineer was responsible for ensuring that the mixed tracks were as high-quality as possible on a playback medium, e.g. a record. In today’s digital age, the three production steps of producing, mixing and mastering are moving forward closer together, e.g. in a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) on hardware, and influence each other more than ever.

What are mixing and mastering?

Mixing

Mixing is a technique of blending all the tracks in a recording to create a version of the song that sounds as good as possible. This is called the mix. The process comprises of:

  • Balancing of the tracks
  • Fine-tuning the sound of each instrument.
  • Panning the track between the speakers.
  • Adding effects to enhance the original recording.

Mastering

Mastering is the final step of audio post-production. The purpose of mastering is to balance the sonic element of the stereo mix and optimize playback across all systems and media formats. Traditionally mastering is done using tools like equalization, compression, limiting, and stereo enhancements. Mastering bridges the gap between artists and consumers.

All the copies and duplication of the audio comes from the master. Mastering also ensures uniformity and consistency of sound between multiple tracks on an album. Ultimately mastering rates a clean and cohesive feeling across all your audios.

What is the difference between mixing and mastering?

  1. Mixing creates balance at individual elements. Mastering takes it a whole and gives it a final polish.
  2. Mixing gives you access to every instrument in a song. While in mastering you only have access to the final mix.
  3. At both mixing and mastering, you’re sitting balance. The difference is that during mixing you are balancing individual instruments. During mastering, you are balancing complete songs and spectral content.
  4. Mixing sessions can be huge. Mastering sessions, on the other hand, typically consist of one type of stereo or multi-track file per song.
  5. Lots of adjustments are required during mixing- some quite heavy-handed. Whereas mastering is the complete opposite. It uses subtle broad strokes that affect the entire song.
  6. Mixing is all bout enhancing the artist’s version, the key is to convey the original intent of the song. And to have the best sound quality professionals use mastering. Mastering ensures that the song sounds as good as the others.
